Coaching vs Mentoring - the difference

While both coaching and mentoring aim to support development, they differ in structure and focus:

  • Coaching: coaching is more structured and a short-term process where a coach works with an individual to achieve specific, measurable goals. Coaches often provide feedback and are sometimes external specialists.
  • Mentoring: mentoring tends to be a more informal, long-term relationship where a mentor offers guidance, support, and wisdom based on their own experience. Mentors are typically within the same organisation and focus on overall personal and professional growth.

Understanding these distinctions helps organisations implement the appropriate support mechanisms to meet their employees’ needs effectively.
