Dragon Professional v16 is the latest version of Nuance’s speech recognition software, and it promises to deliver faster and more accurate dictation than its predecessor, Dragon Professional Individual. But is it worth upgrading to the new version?
In this article, we’ll compare the two versions and see what the differences are.
What’s the same?
Both Dragon Professional 16 and Dragon Professional Individual use deep learning technology to transcribe speech into text, and both offer a high level of accuracy.
They also have a similar user interface, and many of the same features, such as the ability to create custom voice commands, automate repetitive tasks, and control your computer by voice.
The differences
There are two main ones: the interface, and compatibility with Windows 11…
1 – Interface
The interface is less cluttered than Dragon Professional Individual.
The look, feel, and functionality of the new toolbar are all exactly as you would expect from Dragon, but there are now only two drop-down menus, which between them contain all of the features. This is not a new look and will be familiar to users of Dragon Group.
2 – Compatibility with Windows 11
The second, and most significant, difference is Dragon Professional 16’s compatibility with the latest Windows offerings.
Dragon Professional Individual does function fairly adequately on Windows 11 and the latest versions of Microsoft Office and Teams, but regular users will no doubt notice some glitches and frustrations. Dragon Professional 16 is designed first and foremost for Windows 11, and is fully compatible with Microsoft Teams and the latest versions of Microsoft Office 365.
Voice commands
For Dragon users who rely on voice commands, Dragon Professional 16 includes numerous updates and enhancements surrounding support for Microsoft Office like “Modern Comments” when editing documents, support for commands in Microsoft Teams, and accessibility updates.
Of course, as has always been the case, available voice commands do not extend to all applications, and particularly some of the more organisation-specific software many of us use in our day-to-day jobs.
If voice control of these applications is needed, Dragon Professional 16 still includes the ability to create customised voice control using its Advanced Scripting feature. This can be a very technical exercise which requires an understanding of basic coding.
Advanced Dragon scripting is a service that our assistive technology experts here at neurobox are able to provide.
