Navigating Access to Work with Confidence : Key Takeaways and Insights

1.  Access to Work is support beyond reasonable adjustments

Employers still have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments first – Access to Work is intended to fund support that goes beyond what an employer is already providing for their neurodivergent or disabled employees.

2. Eligibility is broad, but linked to work impact

Access to Work can support people who meet the following criteria:

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Live and work in the United Kingdom
  • Are in paid employment or about to start paid work
  • Have a disability, neurodiversity or health condition affecting their ability to work

3. The scheme funds a wide range of workplace support

The funding received from Access to Work can cover a large variety of support such as:

  • Assistive software packages
  • Specialist equipment
  • Workplace coaching
  • Assistive technology training
  • Travel support

It is important to note that the Access to Work scheme acts as a grant/reimbursement rather than providing the services or products directly.

4. Timing matters because delays can be significant

If possible, applicants should apply before their role starts, as waiting times can be significant. Those who are already in a role should still be supported by their employer, it is the employers duty to support the employee during the approval period of the Access to Work funding.

5. Implementation and tracking are critical after an award

Once funding has been awarded, employers must implement support within a specified timeframe. They must managed claims, track coaching, software, licenses to ensure support is in place for the employee. There are certain adjustment management platforms such as neurohub by neurobox, which make the tracking and management process more visible and manageable.
